Virtual mailbox for Stripe: which address fields accept it and which reject CMRAs
Updated October 26, 2026 · Policies and prices checked against primary sources on that date · Affiliate disclosure
Whether you can use a virtual mailbox for Stripe depends on which Stripe product you use and which address field you put it in. Stripe's public support address—the one printed on customer receipts and card statements—can be a virtual mailbox so your home address stays private. Similarly, Stripe Atlas explicitly allows a virtual address when incorporating a Delaware company and applying for an EIN. By contrast, Stripe Issuing, Treasury for platforms, Opal, and Corporate Card strictly block Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) and registered agent addresses, and Stripe's September 30, 2026 API changelog added dedicated CMRA rejection codes to the Accounts API.
Short version
✅ Allowed: your Stripe public customer support / mailing address (business_profile.support_address, shown on customer receipts and card statements) and your Stripe Atlas company incorporation / EIN address.
❌ Blocked: the business entity address and account representative address on Stripe Issuing, Treasury for platforms, Opal, and Corporate Card. New accounts are blocked at onboarding; existing accounts get a 30-day grace period before capabilities are disabled.
⚠️ Requires operational proof / can trigger API errors: the legal / physical business address (company.address) on standard Stripe Payments accounts. Stripe's KYC policy requires you to operate from the business address you provide, and the 2026-09-30 Accounts API update introduced invalid_address_cmra_address for addresses identified as CMRAs or virtual mailboxes.
Which address fields exist on a Stripe account
Founders often run into Stripe verification locks because they treat "my Stripe address" as a single setting. In the Stripe Dashboard and the Stripe Accounts API, your address appears in four separate places with different compliance rules:
Where a virtual mailbox (CMRA) is accepted vs. rejected across Stripe's address fields (checked October 2026).

Who sees it?
Can you use a virtual mailbox (CMRA)?
1. Public support / mailing address
Settings → Public details → Support address (business_profile.support_address)
Public: shown to customers on email receipts and card statements
Yes. Stripe states no CMRA restriction for your public customer support mailing address.
2. Legal / physical business address
Settings → Business details → Business address (company.address)
No for Issuing, Treasury, Opal & Corporate Card. For Standard Payments, Stripe verifies you operate from this address and may request a lease or utility bill.
3. Account representative / owner home address
Settings → Personal details / Business owners (person.address / individual.address)
No. Must be the individual's physical residential street address. Explicitly screened against CMRA and registered agent lists on money-management products.
4. Stripe Atlas company address
Atlas incorporation application → Company address
Filed on Delaware incorporation docs & IRS Form SS-4 (EIN)
Yes for the company address (Atlas even offers partner virtual addresses), no for the founder's home address (which must be a residential address).
Stripe rules by product: Standard Payments vs. Issuing, Treasury, Corporate Card & Atlas
Stripe's address verification becomes stricter when you move from standard card processing to banking and money-management products backed by Stripe's regulated financial partners.
1. Standard Stripe Payments (card processing & checkout)
"Know Your Customer" (KYC) obligations require Stripe to verify that account holders are operating from the business addresses they provide in their account application.
When Stripe can verify your business and representative addresses automatically against public records and credit/KYC bureaus, onboarding finishes without manual uploads. However, if Stripe cannot verify your address independently—or if your address triggers a CMRA or registered-agent check—Stripe asks for documentation showing either your business name or the account owner's name at that operating address (such as a signed rental/lease agreement, utility bill, federal or state tax return, or government-issued formation document). Because a virtual mailbox agreement is not a commercial lease where you physically operate, putting a CMRA in the private KYC business-address field risks a verification hold.
2. Stripe Issuing, Treasury for platforms, Opal, and Corporate Card
If your account uses—or connects to a platform that uses—Stripe Issuing, Treasury for platforms, Opal (Stripe's money-management account that stores funds and sends/receives ACH and wires), or Stripe Corporate Card, Stripe enforces strict automated CMRA and registered-agent blocks. Stripe's Validate addresses for money management products documentation states:
To comply with financial partner requirements, Stripe verifies that all accounts have a physical presence in the United States. This means Stripe can no longer allow addresses for registered agents, mailbox services, or virtual address services. These requirements apply to both: The business entity's address, regardless of the business type [and] The address of the account representative.
Specifically, Stripe enforces two layers of validation on those accounts:
Existing validations: The address must be a valid, deliverable U.S. address and not a P.O. Box, Highway Contract Box, or private mailbox (PMB).
CMRA and registered-agent validations: The address must not belong to a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (such as The UPS Store, FedEx Office, or a virtual mailbox provider) and must not be a registered agent address.
Enforcement timeline:New businesses are blocked from onboarding until they submit a compliant physical address. Existing businesses whose address is flagged as a CMRA or registered agent receive a dashboard banner/email notification and a 30-day grace period to update the address before Stripe disables account capabilities.

Every Stripe rule we track is listed below with direct quotes and primary-source links. See the full CMRA acceptance database for how Stripe compares with banks like Mercury, Relay, and Wells Fargo.
Business address and account representative address
Rejects CMRA / virtual mailbox
Stripe's docs say these products enforce validations that the address is not a PO box, private mailbox, Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) or registered agent address. New businesses are blocked from onboarding until they provide a valid physical address; existing accounts get a 30-day grace period before capabilities are disabled.
“Stripe can no longer allow addresses for registered agents, mailbox services, or virtual address services.”
A Stripe changelog entry dated 2026-09-30 adds the error code invalid_address_cmra_address, returned when an account's address is identified as a CMRA or virtual mailbox address; the account holder must update the address. A separate code covers registered agent addresses (resolvable with proof of address). The entry does not list which capabilities trigger the check, so treat it as 'may be rejected' for ordinary card payments.
“Returned when an account's address is identified as a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) or virtual mailbox address.”
Stripe — standard account verification Payments / fintech
Business address (KYC)
Physical address required (CMRA not named)
Stripe's support article says KYC obligations require it to verify that account holders operate from the business address they provide, and it may ask for a lease, utility bill, tax return or formation documents. The article does not name CMRAs explicitly.
“KYC obligations require Stripe to verify that account holders are operating from the business addresses they provide”
Stripe — Public business information (support address) Payments / fintech
Customer support address (shown on receipts and card statements)
No restriction stated
Stripe requires a public support address that customers can see on card statements or email receipts. Unlike the legal/physical business address verified for KYC, Stripe’s setup documentation describes the support address as public contact information you can update any time in Account settings and states no restriction against using a virtual mailbox or mailing address there.
“Your customers see the following details on either their card statements or in email receipts sent by Stripe: Business name and website URL; Support email address, phone number, and address”
Company address on Atlas application (vs. founder home address & registered agent)
Accepted in some fields only
Stripe Atlas explicitly allows a virtual address as your company address during incorporation (used on IRS Form SS-4 and formation filings, and where the IRS mails the physical EIN confirmation letter). However, each founder must still provide a residential home address for identity verification and 83(b) elections, and Atlas’s Delaware registered agent address cannot be used as a general company or mail-forwarding address.
“If you don’t have an official company address yet, you can use your home address or get a virtual address through one of our partners. We include this address in your EIN application to the IRS and in incorporation documents.”
The update adds two specific error codes to requirements.errors[].code and future_requirements.errors[].code across Account, Person, Capability, BankAccount, and V2.Core.Account objects:
invalid_address_cmra_address — Returned when an account's business address (company.address.*) or representative address (person.address.*) is identified as a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) or virtual mailbox address. Stripe's API error message reads: "The address you provided appears to be associated with a mailbox or virtual address service, which we can't accept. Please update your address to proceed."
invalid_address_registered_agent_address — Returned when an address is identified as a registered agent address. Stripe's API error message reads: "The address you provided appears to be associated with a registered agent, which we can't accept. Please update your address to proceed. If you believe this is an error, you can submit a proof of address document for review."
Notice an important distinction in Stripe's API payload design:
When an address is flagged with invalid_address_registered_agent_address, Stripe's JSON response automatically includes a requirements.alternatives block pointing to documents.proof_of_address.files (for a company) or person.verification.additional_document (for a representative), because a law firm or accounting practice may genuinely operate out of an address that also serves as a registered agent.
When an address is flagged with invalid_address_cmra_address, the changelog states: "To resolve this error, the account holder must update their address." Because the changelog adds these error codes to the core Account, Capability, and Person requirement enums in Accounts v1 and v2 without restricting them to Issuing-only schemas, any Stripe account or Connect platform should treat CMRA addresses as unacceptable in the company.address and person.address fields.
How to fix a flagged Stripe address (and acceptable proof documents)
If your Stripe account shows an incomplete requirement banner or receives an account.updated webhook with invalid_address_cmra_address or invalid_address_registered_agent_address, you have two ways to resolve it within the 30-day window:
Option A: Update to your real physical operating or home address (fastest)
If you entered a virtual mailbox or registered agent address as your business or representative address, go to your Stripe Dashboard (Settings → Business details and Personal details) and replace it with the physical street address where you actually work or live (for a home-based LLC or sole proprietorship, your residential home address). Keep your virtual mailbox in the Public details → Support address field instead.
Option B: Submit a proof-of-address appeal (if you genuinely operate at the flagged location)
If Stripe mistakenly flagged a building where you physically work, Stripe's address validation documentation lists eight acceptable proof-of-address documents. Each document must clearly display either the company name or the company representative's name along with the principal business address:
Lease or rental agreements: A copy of a lease or rental agreement identifying the user as a tenant at that location.
Mortgage statements: A mortgage statement from the last 6 months.
Insurance policies: Business liability, property, or workers' compensation insurance policies.
Tax documents: Filed tax documents from the last 24 months that include the address of operations (for example, state business tax forms).
Financial account statements: Bank account, credit card, or other financial statements from the last 6 months (statements cannot be from Stripe).
Utility bill: A utility bill (water, electricity, gas, internet) from the last 6 months showing the address of operations.
Valid government ID: A driver's license or resident card (accepted only for individuals, sole proprietors, or single-person legal entities).
Company formation documents: Articles of Organization or Articles of Incorporation that state the principal address of your business.
How Stripe Atlas handles virtual mailboxes and registered agents
Stripe Atlas (Stripe's Delaware C-corporation and LLC incorporation service) has a much friendlier policy toward virtual addresses during formation, documented in How to incorporate your company:
Company address (virtual address allowed): Atlas's signup guide states: "If you don't have an official company address yet, you can use your home address or get a virtual address through one of our partners. We include this address in your EIN application to the IRS and in incorporation documents. The IRS will send a physical copy of your EIN confirmation letter to this address." Providing a U.S. company address, a U.S. phone number, and a U.S. SSN allows the IRS to process the EIN in 1–2 business days (versus 10–35 business days without them).
Founder home address (must be residential): Atlas still requires each founder's personal Home address to verify identity and file 83(b) elections, noting: "We don't share it or use it for marketing purposes. You won't receive mail at this address."
Atlas registered agent address (never use as your company or mailing address): Atlas includes one year of Delaware registered agent service, but warns explicitly: "Your registered agent address isn't a general purpose mail-forwarding address for your company and shouldn't be listed as a company address. You can separately use a virtual address service to receive general mail, for customer contact, and to apply to open a bank account."
Important nuance for Atlas founders: While Stripe Atlas lets you put a virtual address on your Delaware incorporation papers and IRS Form SS-4, activating Stripe Issuing / Corporate Card or opening a business bank account at Mercury or Relay will still require you to supply a real physical operating address and founder residential address alongside that mailing address.
How to keep your home address private on Stripe
Many solo founders, creators, and LLC owners buy a virtual mailbox specifically because they do not want customers seeing their home address on receipts or credit card statements. You can achieve full customer-facing privacy on Stripe without violating KYC rules:
Put your virtual mailbox in Public business information → Support address. Per Stripe's Set up your account documentation, customers only see your Public business information (business name, website URL, support email, support phone number, support address, support site URL, and statement descriptor) on card statements and Stripe email receipts. Enter your virtual mailbox here.
Put your real physical operating address in Business details → Business address. This field is used internally by Stripe for KYC verification and financial-partner compliance, not printed on customer receipts.
Put your real home street address in Personal details / Representative address.
Lock down your Stripe Profile if enabled. If you created a Stripe profile, you can make the profile private or hide specific business information fields in your profile settings.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a virtual mailbox on Stripe to hide my home address from customers?
Yes. Put your virtual mailbox in Settings → Public details → Support address (business_profile.support_address). Stripe displays your Public business information on customer email receipts and card statements, while keeping your private KYC business address and personal representative address internal.
Why did Stripe return the error invalid_address_cmra_address?
On September 30, 2026 (API version 2026-09-30.endive), Stripe added invalid_address_cmra_address to the Accounts v1 and v2 requirement error enums. Stripe returns this code when a business address (company.address) or representative address (person.address) is identified as a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) or virtual mailbox. To resolve it, update that field to the physical location where you actually operate or live.
Which Stripe products strictly block CMRA and registered agent addresses?
Stripe’s compliance documentation states that all current and future Stripe Issuing, Treasury for platforms, Opal, and Corporate Card accounts prohibit registered agent, private mailbox, CMRA, and virtual address services for both the business entity address and the account representative address. New accounts are blocked at onboarding; existing flagged accounts get a 30-day grace period before capabilities are disabled.
Does standard Stripe payment processing allow a virtual mailbox as the business address?
Stripe’s standard KYC policy states that it must verify account holders are operating from the business addresses they provide. If Stripe cannot verify your address automatically, it requests a signed rental or lease agreement, utility bill, tax return, or government-issued formation document. Because a virtual mailbox is not a physical operating location, using it as your KYC business address can trigger a verification hold.
Can I use a virtual mailbox with Stripe Atlas?
Yes, for the Company address field during incorporation. Stripe Atlas’s signup documentation explicitly states you can use your home address or get a virtual address through one of its partners for your EIN application and Delaware incorporation documents. However, founders must still provide their personal residential home address for identity verification and 83(b) elections.
Can I use my Stripe Atlas registered agent address as my business or mailing address?
No. Stripe Atlas documentation explicitly states that your Delaware registered agent address is only for official state legal notices, is not a general-purpose mail-forwarding address, and should not be listed as your company address.
What documents does Stripe accept if my physical address is mistakenly flagged?
If you genuinely operate at an address that Stripe flagged, you can submit a proof-of-address document showing your company name or representative name and the principal business address: a lease or rental agreement, mortgage statement (last 6 months), business insurance policy, filed tax document (last 24 months), non-Stripe bank or credit card statement (last 6 months), utility bill (last 6 months), government ID (for individuals/sole proprietors), or formation documents showing the principal address.
