Relay virtual mailbox rules: legal vs. operating address requirements
If you are opening a business checking account at Relay Financial (whose banking services are provided through Thread Bank, Member FDIC), you need to distinguish between Relay's legal business address and its operating address. Relay's official help center explicitly allows a registered agent address as your company's legal address—including for non-U.S. residents forming a U.S. LLC—but strictly bans virtual mailboxes, mailbox rental services (such as The UPS Store), P.O. boxes, and registered agent addresses for your operating address and each owner's personal residential address. This guide breaks down Relay's address rules field by field with exact quotes from Relay's documentation.
Short version (Relay Help Center, checked October 27, 2026)
✅ Legal business address: a registered agent address is accepted here, including for non-U.S. residents establishing a U.S. business, as long as you also provide a valid physical operating address.
❌ Operating address (where your business actually operates): must be a real physical place of business (such as your U.S. or international home address, or a physical office/workspace). Relay explicitly bans virtual mailboxes, mailbox rental services, P.O. boxes, and registered agent addresses.
❌ Personal residential address (all business owners): must be a real residential street address. Virtual mailboxes, mailbox rental services, P.O. boxes, and registered agent addresses are not accepted.
📬 How a virtual mailbox fits: use your home or office as your Relay operating address for KYC compliance, and use a virtual mailbox for general LLC correspondence, vendor billing, and IRS Form SS-4 mail.
Relay's address fields, side by side
Relay's Using a Registered Agent Address and Operating Address and Required Documents to Open a Relay Account articles split address collection into distinct roles:
| Relay address field | What it represents | What Relay accepts | Registered agent OK? | Virtual mailbox / CMRA OK? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business legal address | Where your U.S. entity is legally registered on state formation documents | Your physical business address OR your U.S. registered agent address | Yes. Explicitly allowed (including for non-U.S. residents), triggers prompt for a separate operating address | Not for physical verification. Relay requires a physical U.S. address or registered agent address paired with a real operating address |
| Operating address | Where your day-to-day business activity actually takes place | Your home address (domestic U.S. or international) or a physical office or workspace | No. Explicitly prohibited | No. Relay explicitly bans P.O. boxes, virtual mailboxes, and mailbox rental services (such as The UPS Store) |
| Owner personal residential address | Where each beneficial owner / control person personally lives | A verifiable personal residential street address | No. Explicitly prohibited | No. Relay explicitly bans P.O. boxes, virtual mailboxes, and mailbox rental services |

From Using a Registered Agent Address and Operating Address for Your Business:

2. On what counts—and does not count—as an operating address
From the same Relay help article:
"Your operating address is the location where your business actually operates. It must be a real, physical place of business, and you'll be required to provide it if you choose to use a Registered Agent address as your business address during the registration process.
Operating addresses can include: Your home address (domestic or international); A physical office or workspace.

From the same Relay help article:
"All business owners must provide a verifiable personal (residential) address, even if a Registered Agent address is used for the business. |---|---|---|---|---|
| Relay Bank / fintech | Legal address (registered agent OK) vs. operating address and owner personal address (registered agent, PO box, virtual mailbox not OK) | Accepted in some fields only | Relay's help article (updated August 11, 2026) says a registered agent address may serve as the business's legal address, including for non-U.S. residents, but it cannot be the operating address or an owner's personal residential address. Registered agent addresses, PO boxes, and virtual mailboxes or mailbox rental services are listed as not acceptable operating addresses.“Yes, a registered agent address may serve as your business's legal address on Relay, including for non-U.S. residents establishing a U.S. business. It cannot be used as your operating address or your personal residential address.” | Relay Help: Using a Registered Agent Address and Operating Address Relay Help: Required Documents to Open a Relay Account by Entity Type Relay Help: Updating your business and billing address on Relay October 27, 2026 |
| Federal bank Customer Identification Program rule (31 CFR 1020.220) Regulation | Address banks must collect | Physical address required (CMRA not named) | U.S. banks' CIP must collect, for an individual, a residential or business street address, and for a non-individual (corporation, partnership, trust), a principal place of business, local office or other physical location. This is why bank KYC asks for a physical address in addition to any mailing address.“For a person other than an individual (such as a corporation, partnership, or trust), a principal place of business, local office, or other physical location” | eCFR: 31 CFR 1020.220 October 27, 2026 |
Accepted Proof of Address (POA) documents at Relay
Relay's help center notes that if your operating address is different from your personal residential address, you may be asked to submit a Proof of Address (POA) document to confirm the business location. According to Relay's Required Documents to Open a Relay Account by Entity Type article:
"Any of the following documents work for verifying a business or personal U.S. address, as long as the address is physical (no PO boxes, no virtual mail services): Utility bill (mobile phone or internet service); Bank statement; Lease agreement; Pay stub; Insurance bill or statement (auto or medical); U.S. driver's license, unexpired."
Notice that because a CMRA virtual mailbox is a mail-receiving service rather than a physical residence or office lease—and its delivery point is flagged in the USPS DPV CMRA table—a virtual mailbox receipt or Form 1583 will not pass Relay's Proof of Address review.
Why Relay requires an operating address (31 CFR 1020.220)
Relay explains the regulatory reason in plain English in its help center: "While a registered agent address is considered a legal mailing address, it does not prove where the business activity actually happens. Regulators expect us to collect the principal place of business/operating address to understand the real-world footprint of the business."
Under the federal Customer Identification Program (CIP) rule at 31 CFR § 1020.220, every U.S. bank (including Relay's partner bank) must collect a "principal place of business, local office, or other physical location" for a business entity, and a "residential or business street address" for an individual. For how 9 major U.S. banks enforce this rule, read our virtual mailbox for a bank account guide.
Relay vs. Mercury on registered agent and virtual addresses
Founders forming a Delaware LLC or Wyoming LLC often compare Relay and Mercury:
- Legal address clarity: Relay explicitly states that a registered agent address may serve as your business's legal address (including for non-U.S. residents), and simply prompts you for a separate operating address. Mercury's legal-address article bans P.O. boxes and virtual offices/workspaces without giving an explicit yes/no on registered agent addresses.
- Operating / physical address: Both Relay and Mercury strictly prohibit virtual mailboxes, CMRAs, P.O. boxes, and registered agent addresses as the operating/physical address, and both explicitly accept your home address (U.S. or international) as the operating/physical address.
- Owner residential address: Both ban mail drops, virtual mailboxes, P.O. boxes, and registered agent addresses for beneficial owners' personal addresses.
Compliant setup for remote LLC owners
- Legal business address on Relay: Enter either your physical operating address OR the registered agent address listed on your LLC's Articles of Organization / Certificate of Formation.
- Operating address on Relay: Enter your real physical workspace—such as your U.S. home address, your international home address (if you are a non-U.S. founder), or a leased physical office. Using the same address for your personal residential address and operating address often avoids a separate business Proof of Address request.
- Personal residential address on Relay: Enter the street address where you actually live, supported by an unexpired driver's license, utility bill, bank statement, or lease.
- Virtual mailbox (outside Relay KYC): Use your virtual mailbox (after completing USPS Form 1583) for IRS Form SS-4 Line 4 mailing correspondence, vendor invoices, customer receipts, and Stripe's public support address.

Frequently asked questions
Does Relay accept a virtual mailbox address?
Not as your operating address or personal residential address. Relay's help center explicitly states that P.O. Boxes, virtual mailboxes, and mailbox rental services (such as The UPS Store) are not accepted as operating addresses or personal residential addresses. However, you can use a real physical operating address (such as your home or office) for verification and use a virtual mailbox for general company correspondence.
Can I use a registered agent address on Relay?
Yes, for your legal business address only. Relay's help center states that a registered agent address may serve as your business's legal address on Relay—including for non-U.S. residents establishing a U.S. business—provided you also enter a separate, real physical operating address where your business actually operates.
Can I use my home address as my operating address on Relay?
Yes. Relay explicitly states that your operating address can be your home address (whether located in the U.S. or internationally) or a physical office or workspace, as long as it is a valid physical location where your business conducts day-to-day activity.
What documents does Relay accept for address verification?
According to Relay's Required Documents help article, accepted documents for verifying a physical U.S. business or personal address (no P.O. boxes or virtual mail services) include a utility bill (including mobile phone or internet service), bank statement, lease agreement, pay stub, auto or medical insurance bill or statement, or an unexpired U.S. driver's license.
When does Relay require a Proof of Address (POA) document for the operating address?
Relay's help center states that if your operating address is different from your personal residential address, you may be asked to provide a Proof of Address (POA) document to confirm the business location.
How does Relay compare to Mercury on registered agent addresses?
Relay is clearer than Mercury on registered agent addresses: Relay explicitly permits a registered agent address as your legal business address if paired with a real physical operating address (including an international home address for non-U.S. founders). Both Relay and Mercury prohibit virtual mailboxes, CMRAs, P.O. boxes, and registered agent addresses for the physical/operating address and owner residential address.
How do I update my business or billing address on Relay?
In the Relay web dashboard, sign in, navigate to the Settings tab, select Business Info, input your updated U.S. business/billing address, and click Save.
