Where you rent a virtual mailbox—and where you form your LLC—determines which address fields your mailbox can legally fill. Every U.S. state requires a physical in-state street address for your registered agent, while most states allow a virtual mailbox (CMRA) for your mailing address. Use the interactive map and filter bar below to inspect state registered-agent rules, LLC privacy hubs, RV domicile rules, and virtual mailbox providers across 12 major U.S. hubs.
How state LLC rules interact with federal bank & Stripe KYC:
1. State Registered Agent (Service of Process): Requires a physical in-state street address staffed during business hours. States like Delaware (6 Del. C. § 18-104), Washington (RCW 23.95.415), and Colorado explicitly prohibit using a virtual office, PMB, or mail-forwarding service as the registered agent street address.
2. LLC Mailing & Tax Address: A virtual mailbox works across all 50 states as your business correspondence mailing address and on IRS Form SS-4 Line 4 (LLC address guide).
3. Bank & Stripe KYC: Regardless of your LLC's state, U.S. banks (31 CFR 1020.220 CIP rules), Mercury, and Stripe require your real physical operating/home address for KYC while accepting a virtual mailbox for mailing or public customer support.

DEWilmington / New Castle, Delaware
LLC Privacy HubRegistered Agent Strict Rules
6 Del. C. § 18-104: Every Delaware LLC must maintain a registered office and agent in Delaware. Under § 18-104, a registered agent “may not perform its duties or functions solely through the use of a virtual office, the retention by the agent of a mail forwarding service, or both.” (Source)
Why founders pick DE: Premier LLC and C-Corp formation hub (including Stripe Atlas). Delaware Certificates of Formation do not require listing member names publicly.
How to set it up: Use a commercial registered agent for legal service of process, and rent a Wilmington or New Castle virtual mailbox as your separate company mailing address. (iPostal1 also offers a $99/yr DE registered agent add-on with any business plan.)
W.S. 17-28-101: Every Wyoming entity must keep a registered office at “a street address in Wyoming which shall be a physical location where the business entity's registered agent, or a natural person who has an agency relationship with the registered agent, can accept service of process as provided in W.S. 17-28-104 and is physically present at that location.” Agents for more than 10 entities must register as commercial registered agents. (Source)
Why founders pick WY: Popular LLC privacy hub with no state personal or corporate income tax. Cheyenne and Sheridan are the primary commercial mail and registered agent centers.
Banking caveat: Forming a Wyoming LLC with a Cheyenne mailbox does not satisfy bank physical-address KYC; Mercury and U.S. banks still require your real operating/home address.
Fla. Stat. § 605.0113 & Sunbiz Instructions: Florida law requires each LLC to keep a registered office and a registered agent whose business address is identical to the registered office. The Division of Corporations' instructions state: “The registered agent must have a physical street address in Florida. (Do not list a P.O. Box address.)” The LLC's separate mailing address may be a P.O. box; CMRAs are not named. (Sunbiz · § 605.0113)
Why founders & RVers pick FL: Miami, Orlando, and Tampa are major international and e-commerce business mail hubs, while Crestview and northern Florida are longtime hubs for full-time RV domicile and mail forwarding.
CMRA & Form 1583: Florida virtual mailboxes require USPS Form 1583 verification and work well as your LLC's mailing address and bank card-delivery address.
Tex. Bus. Orgs. Code § 5.201: The registered office “(1) must be located at a street address where process may be personally served on the entity's registered agent; (2) is not required to be a place of business of the filing entity or foreign filing entity; and (3) may not be solely a mailbox service or a telephone answering service.” (BOC § 5.201 · TX SOS Form 401)
Why founders & RVers pick TX: No state personal income tax and one of the largest virtual mailbox networks in the country across Austin, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio.
Best use case: Use an Austin or Houston virtual mailbox as your LLC's mailing address, IRS correspondence address, and Stripe public customer support address.
NRS Chapter 77 (NRS 77.300 & 77.310): Under Nevada's Model Registered Agents Act, every registered agent filing must appoint a commercial or noncommercial registered agent in Nevada, and NRS 77.300 states that whenever a filing requires an address, it must state “1. An actual street address or rural route box number in this State; and 2. A mailing address in this State, if different from the address under subsection 1.” (NRS Ch. 77)
Why founders pick NV: Popular West Coast alternative to Delaware and Wyoming for LLC formation, asset holding companies, and RV domicile in Las Vegas, Henderson, and Reno.
Registered agent + mailbox pairing: Keep a commercial registered agent on file with the Nevada Secretary of State and use a Las Vegas or Reno virtual mailbox for daily business mail and check scanning.
SD DPS Residency Affidavit: Full-time travelers with no residence in another state can get an SD driver license or ID with a South Dakota PMB, a one-night stay receipt in South Dakota (no more than one year old) from an RV park, campground or hotel, and a notarized affidavit affirming the PMB “is a mail forwarding service, and not a virtual only mail service.” For voting, SDCL 12-1-4 (effective January 1, 2026) requires a dwelling where you live and usually sleep for at least 30 consecutive days. (Affidavit · SDCL 12-1-4)
Why RVers & nomads pick SD: Box Elder (Rapid City area) and Sioux Falls are the top full-time RVer mail-forwarding hubs in the U.S.
Crucial banking distinction: Even when a South Dakota PMB is printed on your state driver's license, USPS tags the address in its DPV CMRA table—so banks like Wells Fargo and Mercury still reject PMBs as a residential physical address under 31 CFR 1020.220.
RCW 23.95.415 / WA SOS: The Washington Secretary of State explicitly states: “The Registered Agent must maintain a physical address in Washington State (PO Boxes or PMBs are prohibited).” (Source)
How WA filings work: A P.O. Box or PMB is prohibited as the registered agent's physical street address in Washington, though a separate mailing address may be listed.
Why founders pick WA: No personal state income tax and strong Seattle/Spokane virtual mailbox coverage for SaaS, e-commerce, and Pacific Northwest businesses.
Colorado SOS Registered Agent FAQ:“Commercial or P.O. Box addresses cannot be used as a registered agent's physical street address.” They may only be entered as the agent's separate mailing address if located in Colorado. (Source)
How CO filings work: The registered agent must have a physical Colorado street address customarily open during normal business hours.
Best use case: Rent a Denver or Boulder virtual mailbox for your LLC's mailing address field, customer invoices, and Stripe public support address while using a registered agent for the street address field.
NY LLC Publication & Service of Process: In New York, the Secretary of State acts as statutory agent for service of process and mails process to the address designated by the LLC. Newly formed NY LLCs must publish formation notices for 6 weeks in two newspapers in their office's county.
NYC vs. Albany strategy: Newspaper publication costs in Manhattan (New York County) are substantially higher than in Albany County, while NYC virtual mailboxes remain the top choice for a prestigious customer-facing mailing or Stripe support address.
CA SOS Form LLC-12 (Statement of Information): California requires a physical street address (no P.O. Box) for the LLC's principal office and California registered agent, while providing a separate field for the mailing address.
Why founders pick CA hubs: Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley virtual mailboxes are popular for tech startups, creators, and remote companies that want a California mailing address and debit card delivery address.
Fintech KYC reminder: San Francisco-based Mercury rejects virtual mailboxes and CMRAs for physical/legal KYC fields—use your home/office for verification and your CA mailbox for card delivery.
O.C.G.A. § 14-11-209 & GA SOS FAQ: Under O.C.G.A. § 14-11-209, each Georgia LLC must continuously maintain in Georgia a registered office (which need not be a place of its business) and a registered agent whose business office address is identical to the registered office's street address and county. The Georgia Secretary of State's Business Division FAQ notes that a post office box or "mail drop" may not be used as the registered agent address.
Why founders pick Atlanta: Major Southeast commercial hub with high virtual mailbox density across iPostal1, Traveling Mailbox, and Anytime Mailbox.
Best use case: Ideal for LLC mailing addresses, IRS Form SS-4 Line 4 correspondence, check scanning/deposits, and keeping residential addresses off public invoices.
Illinois LLC Act (805 ILCS 180/1-35 & 1-5): Under 805 ILCS 180/1-35(a), each LLC “shall continuously maintain in this State a registered agent and registered office.” Section 1-5 defines the registered office as the office in Illinois whose address, “including street, number, city and county,” is on file with the Secretary of State at which any process, notice, or demand required or permitted by law may be served upon the registered agent. (805 ILCS 180/1-35)
Why founders pick Chicago: Flagship Midwest business address hub with downtown and suburban mail centers offering digital mail scanning, package consolidation, and check deposit add-ons.
Best use case: Pair an Illinois registered agent with a Chicago virtual mailbox for vendor correspondence, IRS mail, and Stripe customer support receipts.

Can I use a virtual mailbox in Delaware or Wyoming as my LLC's registered agent address?
No. Delaware Code Title 6, § 18-104 explicitly states that a registered agent may not perform its duties solely through a virtual office or a mail forwarding service. Wyoming (Wyo. Stat. § 17-28-101 et seq.) likewise requires an in-state physical street address for the registered office and regulates commercial registered agents separately from mail drops. Use a registered agent service for legal service of process and a virtual mailbox for your LLC's separate mailing address.
Which states explicitly ban PMBs or commercial mail drops as a registered agent address?
Every U.S. state requires an in-state physical street address where a registered agent can accept service of process in person during business hours. Several states name virtual offices or private mailboxes (PMBs) directly: Delaware (6 Del. C. § 18-104) bars performing registered agent duties solely via a virtual office or mail forwarding service; Washington (RCW 23.95.415 / WA SOS) states PO Boxes or PMBs are prohibited; Colorado SOS states commercial or P.O. Box addresses cannot be used as the registered agent's physical street address; and Texas SOS states a registered office cannot be solely a mailbox service.
If I form an LLC in a tax-free state like Wyoming, Nevada, Florida, or Texas, will banks accept my virtual mailbox there?
Banks and fintechs (such as Mercury, Relay, and Wells Fargo) will accept a virtual mailbox only as a mailing or card-delivery address. Under the federal Customer Identification Program rule (31 CFR 1020.220), U.S. banks must collect the physical location where your business actually operates plus each beneficial owner's residential street address. Forming an out-of-state LLC with a virtual mailbox does not replace the need for a verifiable physical operating or home address for bank KYC.
Why is South Dakota popular on the virtual mailbox map for full-time RVers?
South Dakota has no state income tax and allows full-time travelers to establish state residency and obtain a driver's license using a South Dakota private mailbox (PMB) address paired with a residency affidavit and a receipt from one night at a South Dakota campground or hotel. However, federal banking rules (31 CFR 1020.220) are separate from state DMV rules, so banks may still ask RVers for a physical residential address or next-of-kin street address.
Which virtual mailbox providers have the most U.S. state hubs and registered agent add-ons?
As of our October 22, 2026 check, iPostal1 offers business virtual mailing addresses starting from $14.99/month (varies by location) and offers a $99/year registered agent add-on in 25 listed jurisdictions (including DE, WY, FL, TX, NV, WA, CO, NY, CA, GA, and IL). Anytime Mailbox offers location-dependent plans starting from $9.99/month, Traveling Mailbox offers plans starting at $15/month (35 page scans included), and Stable offers a $25/month per-state registered agent add-on across all 50 states.
